Slovakia Elects First Female President, Zuzana Čaputová

Lawyer and political novice, Zuzana Čaputová has won Slovakia’s presidential elections, making her the first female president of the European country.

According to Politico, the 45-year-old who has little political experience, defeated Maroš Šefčovič, the European Commission Vice President and candidate of the ruling Smer-SD party. In the election, she received 58.3 percent of the votes tallied against his 42 percent.

Čaputová previously defeated her opponent in the first round of elections, which took place two weeks earlier, recording more than twice the number of votes he received, making her final win less shocking.

According to the president-elect, her decision to run for office was motivated, in part, by the public outrage that followed the assassination of an investigative journalist, Ján Kuciak, and his fiancée, Martina.

Kuciak had been investigating the relationship between politicians in the country and organized crime before he was murdered in his home alongside his fiancée, last year.

The killings resulted in the resignation of Robert Fico, leader of the Smer-SD party, and the former Prime Minister of the country.

Čaputová, who ran a campaign based on anti-corruption and liberalism, has been a long time crusader for the people even before her involvement in politics. Her most notable case is her fight against an illegal landfill lasting 14 years, which earned her the moniker “Slovakia’s Erin Brokovich.”

As a member of Progressive Slovakia Party, which currently has no seat in the country’s parliament, Čaputová‘s ideologies, where she supports freedom in a country yet to legalize same-sex marriage and adoption, was a sharp contrast to the values Šefčovič projected.

His value-based campaign backfired when he was unable to recite the 10 commandment during a press campaign stop, this year.

While the presidential seat of the country is largely ceremonial, the president-elect has reiterated her commitment to strengthening the country’s judicial system and ensuring justice for all.
