US 2020 Presidential Elections: Who is winning the money race?

Candidates looking to be elected America’s next president have been raising funds to pursue their ambitions in the highly competitive arena. With the close of the 2nd quarter, how has it gone so far?

The biggest fundraiser: According to figures announced by from the campaigns, the incumbent President, Donald Trump has raised the highest amount money in the 2nd quarter towards his re-election bid. President Trump and the Republican National Committee announced a total of $105 million raised in the second quarter, with Trump’s re-election campaign taking $54 million. Mr. Trump notably raised $24.8m dollars within 24 hours from the kick-off of his presidential campaign.

And the runner-up is: Pete Buttigieg, Mayor of South Bend, Indiana, who raised $24.8 million. This makes him the biggest fundraiser among the 23-person democratic party contenders in the 2nd quarter.

Former Vice President, Joe Biden comes third with $21.5 million raised. One point to note is that Biden entered the race two weeks after the start of the second quarter.

The New York Times reports the total contributions among the candidates as follows:

  • Pete Buttigieg: $24.8 million
  • Joe Biden: $21.5 million
  • Bernier Sanders: $18 million
  • Michael Bennet: $2.8 million

The lowest fundraiser? President Trump’s likely only Republican challenger, Bill Weld raised $688,000. But the RNC’s unwavering support for President Trump, makes his candidacy a fringe one.

More fundraising totals are expected to be announced ahead of the Federal Electoral Commission deadline on July 15.
