The election comes in the middle of a migration controversy concerning a deal President Morales made with US President Trump.

In light of this, President-elect Giammattei will have some key issues to contend with once he assumes office, some of which include:

The US-Guatemala migration deal

In July, President Morales signed a deal with the US that would force US asylum seekers from Honduras and El Salvador to apply for asylum in Guatemala first. The agreement has me widespread criticism and Giammattei has expressed his desire to improve the deal.

Shortly after he was declared winner, he told Reuters: “I hope that during this transition the doors will open to get more information so we can see what, from a diplomatic point of view, we can do to remove from this deal the things that are not right for us, or how we can come to an agreement with the United States.”

Corruption

Giammattei is against bringing back the International Commission Against Impunity in Guatemala (CICIG) whose mandate ends in September 2019. According to the BBC, corruption is one of the top issues voters want to see tackled, but corruption took a backseat in the campaign.

The Economy

In his campaign, he promised to build a wall of opportunities to reduce Guatemalan’s emigration to the US and “in order to lessen the disparity between the rich and the poor, he wants to attract more foreign investment to Guatemala by strengthening the protections granted to private property,” the BBC reported.

President-elect Giammattei will be sworn in on January 14th, 2020 to serve a four-year non-renewable term.
