Facebook Ready for 2020 US Elections

Facebook founder, Mark Zuckerberg, has stated that the social media platform is prepared to handle and prevent misinformation, as well as other attempts made by foreign states aimed at influencing the US election results in November.

Zuckerberg made this known in a televised interview with the BBC, where he revealed that he was “pretty confident” that his company had learned from the 2016 presidential elections, which brought President Donald Trump into office, and is more than equipped to tackle issues relating to election meddling that might pop up this year.

“Countries are going to continue to try and interfere and we are going to see issues like that but we have learned a lot since 2016 and I feel pretty confident that we are going to be able to protect the integrity of the upcoming elections,” he said in the interview, adding, “One big area that we were behind on in 2016 but I think now are quite advanced at is identifying and fighting these coordinated information campaigns that come from different state actors around the world.”

Describing the site’s prevention scheme to prevent election interference by countries such as Russia, Iran, and China as a “little bit of an arms race”, Zuckerberg said: “We don’t want other governments to try and interfere in elections, so regardless of how effective that is, I view it as our job to work with everyone we can to stop that from happening.”

Over the years, Facebook and WhatsApp have become leading sources of information, especially during campaign and election season. In a testimony to the U.S. Senate in 2018, Facebook admitted that Russia-backed content reached as many as 126 million Americans during the campaign between Trump and former Secretary of State and Democratic candidate, Hilary Clinton.

In dealing with misinformation, the CEO stated that the platform will take down information that put people at “imminent risk of harm”, while unverified information that does not pose danger will be stopped from spreading.
