Former President of Ghana and presidential candidate for the December 2020 elections John Mahama, has chosen Jane Naana Opoku-Agyemang as his running mate. She is the first woman since the fourth republic to be on a major Ghanaian party’s presidential ticket.

It will be a tight battle between John Mahama and the incumbent President Nana Akufo-Addo, who defeated him in the late 2016 election. Her selection followed the unanimous endorsement of her candidature by the National Democratic Congress’s (NDC) Council of Elders and National Executive Committee, in line with its constitution.

“We are certain in our mind that this is a winning ticket. His Excellency John Dramani Mahama ably supported by the competent, trustworthy, honest, sincere and matured Opoku-Agyemang will deliver victory for the NDC in the December elections,” the National Communication Officer of the NDC, Sammy Gyamfi said

Ms Naana is a university professor and former Minister of Education. She was also the first female vice-chancellor of the University of Cape Coast in 2008. She has served in various academic positions, including as Academic Director of the School for International Training in the History and Cultures of the African Diaspora.

In March 2007, she was one of five scholars who delivered talks during the 200th Anniversary of the Abolition of Slavery at the United Nations Headquarters in New York. In October 2009, she was elected as the representative of Ghana to the Executive Board of the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation (UNESCO). She is a Fulbright scholar, member of the Ghana Academy of Arts and Sciences and Fellow of the Commonwealth of Learning.

While Ghana has a multi-party system, two main parties dominate the political landscape: the National Democratic Congress (NDC) which is the main opposition party, and the New Patriotic Party (NPP) which is the ruling party. If John Mahama and his running mate win against President Nana Akufo-Addo’s NPP, Ms Naana will become the first female Vice President of Ghana.

President Akufo-Addo, unseated Mr Mahama in 2016, scoring 53.8 per cent of votes.
