Ghana: Five Presidential Candidates Disqualified

The Electoral Commission of Ghana (EC), has announced that 12 presidential aspirants have been given the green light to contest in the country’s upcoming general elections scheduled for December 7, 2020. 

Speaking at a press conference in Accra, the Chairperson for the Commission, Jean Mensa, made the announcement for the clearance and disqualification of candidates following the submission of respective forms by presidential hopefuls ahead of the elections. 

In her statement, Mensa also indicated that many issues triggered the disqualification of 5 presidential candidates as a total of 17 forms of interest had been submitted to the commission. The presidential aspirants who were disqualified include Kofi Koranteng, Marricke Kofi Gane, Akwasi Odike of the United Progressive Party (UPP), Kwesi Busumburu of the People’s National Party (PNP), and the United Front Party’s (UFP) Agyenim Boateng. 

She further revealed that while the GHC100,000 filing fee would be refunded to disqualified candidates in line with the rules surrounding the process, cases that bother on allegations of forgery of signatures and manufacturing of endorsees will be forwarded to the Police Criminal Investigation Department (CID) for further probe. 

However, 12 aspirants have been successfully cleared to contest the December Presidential Elections. The 12 include Nana Akufo-Addo, John Mahama, Alfred Walker, Bridgitte Dzorgbenuku, Akua Donkor, Konadu Agyeman-Rawlings, Hassan Ayariga, Ivor Greenstreet, Kofi Akpaloo, David Apasera, and Henry Herbert Nartey. 

Female Candidates In Ghana Get The Green Light 

All three female candidates who filed nominations to compete in the presidential race in the upcoming December 7 polls have also been given the green light by the Electoral Commission of Ghana to contest.

The three are the leader of the Ghana Freedom Party (GFP) Akua Donkor, leader of the National Democratic Party, Nana Konadu Agyeman Rawlings, and the flagbearer of the Progressive People’s Party, Brigitte Dzogbenuku (PPP).

Joining the women in the race are Prof Jane Naana Opoku Agyemang of the NDC and Margaret Sarfo of the LPG who are going into the polls as vice-presidential candidates.
