Ghana 2020: What We Know

As Ghana prepares for decisive general elections set for December 7th, the stakes are at an all-time high. While the country’s elections umpire has reiterated its commitment to free and fair elections, a presidential candidate attempts to clear the air with regards to doubts surrounding her candidacy.

We Are Ready To Conduct Credible General Elections – EC

With elections just a few weeks away, the Ghanaian Electoral Commission (EC) has revealed that all its cards are set for a credible general election next month.

Speaking to members of the press, Siriboe Quarcoe who serves as the EC’s Director of Electoral Services revealed that the Commission has met with various political parties in Ghana at an inter-party advisory committee meeting to demonstrate its preparedness for the upcoming general elections.

“They were satisfied with the processes that we have put in place to conduct the polls. We demonstrated the way the biometric verification device works, and they all accepted it and commended the EC for a good job,” he said.

Ahead of the polls, 12 candidates have been approved by the Commission to contest in the presidential elections. These candidates include incumbent President and New Patriotic Party candidate Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, National Democratic Congress’ John Dramani Mahama and former first lady and National Democratic Party (NDP) candidate, Nana Konadu Agyeman-Rawlings.

Rawlings Is Still In The Race

The NDP has moved to clarify rumors surrounding its presidential candidate, Nana Konadu Agyeman-Rawlings, and her position in the upcoming polls.

Rawlings, who recently lost her husband, former President Jerry Rawlings, was rumoured to have dropped out of the presidential race, information her party has revealed to be false.

Addressing journalists in the capital Accra, Mohammed Frimpong, NDP National Secretary suggested the announcement was motivated by the NDC’s desperation to salvage the dying political fortunes of its flag bearer, John Dramani Mahama. Frimpong also stressed that the NDP candidate “has not indicated a decision to pull out and has not informed the Electoral Commission” as claimed by the false report.

Agyeman-Rawlings is contesting the presidency for the second time, having been defeated in 2016.

Ghana will hold presidential and parliamentary elections on December 7, 2020, to elect a president and 275 legislators.
