California Senator, Kamala Harris ‘wins’ first 2020 Democratic Presidential Debate

Following the first 2020 Democratic Party Presidential Debate which held on June 26th and 27th, California Senator, Kamala Harris is reportedly surging in the polls.

20 presidential hopefuls from the Democratic Party took the stage on Wednesday and Thursday night in Miami, Florida looking to emerge as President Trump’s challenger in 2020.

The debate which lasted two nights, had 10 candidates sparring on each night. The candidates debated issues ranging from Climate Change to Immigration, Healthcare and Education.

In one of the most talked about moments of the debate, Kamala Harris took on Joe Biden over his record on school desegregation. She accused Biden of opposing Federal Busing – a programme that provided transportation for students to schools within or outside their local areas to ensure racial integration in public schools. Biden denied her claim.

What the polls are saying

Although Biden remained in his in first place, he has dropped 10% while Sen. Kamala Harris has doubled. According to CNN, “The poll, conducted after the two-night debate, finds 22% of registered voters who are Democrats or Democratic-leaning independents backing Biden for the party’s presidential nomination…” Per the report, Biden was followed by Harris (17%), Warren (15% ) and Sen. Bernie Sanders (14%). “No one else in the 23-person field tested hits 5%.”

The next series of debates will take place on July 30th and 31st in Detroit, Michigan.
