India Elections: Rahul Gandhi Resigns as Congress Party President

The President of the Indian National Congress Party, Rahul Gandhi, has resigned. This follows the party’s landslide defeat in the national elections held in May, which saw the return to power of Prime Minister Narendra Modi of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).

In the resignation letter shared on his Twitter account, Gandhi wrote: “As President of the Congress Party, I am responsible for the loss of the 2019 election. Accountability is critical for the future growth of our party. It is for this reason that I have resigned as Congress president.”

In the just concluded elections, Gandhi also lost the seat in his own family constituency of Amethi, though he remains a Member of Parliament having won a second seat in the southern state of Kerala.

Gandhi had been the President of the Indian National Congress since December 2017, after taking over from his mother, Sonia Gandhi.

He stated that he resists BJP’s idea of India. “Since it came to power, the BJP has been accused of targeting minorities and weakening state institutions under Mr Modi’s powerful leadership. It has consistently dismissed such allegations,” BBC reports.

He expressed his gratitude to his supporters and reaffirmed his commitment to continue to fight for India.
